INTRODUCTION
"Nobody ever got rich working for somebody else"
So why not set up a business of your own, take charge of your
life and become really prosperous? As John Naisbitt and
Patricia Aburdene are saying in their book "Reinventing the
Corporation":
"In the industrial society, it took megabucks to build a
plant or factory. Now you need a telephone, a kitchen table,
a customer, and you are in business. Provided you have a
vision, belief in yourself, and the unique ability to turn
your vision into a reality".
NewBiz is a Brainstorming Program to assist you in dreaming
up ideas to start your own business on a shoestring, based on
the tangible and intangible assets that you already have.
Since you'll be using your own "Brain and Sweat Capital", you
will need little or no money from your bank to launch your
Page 2 of NEWBIZ.DOC
own business successfully.
NewBiz is based on the premise that at least 80% of your
tangible and intangible assets are not being fully used and
are in fact more or less laying idle, resulting in a terrible
waste of personal and business potential.
In order to activate this potential, NewBiz employs a new
Creativity Technique developed by CCI Ltd. called Random
Asset Pairing (RAP) with which tangible and intangible assets
that you have or can dispose of are randomly combined and
presented in ever changing pairs to form the basis for the
pleasant and easy generation of creative business ideas.
ABOUT ASP
ASP, the Association of Shareware Professionals(R), was
formed in April 1987 to strengthen the future of Shareware
(user supported software) as an alternative to traditional
commercial software. Its members, all of whom are programmers
subscribing to a code of ethics or non-programmers sincerely
interested in the advancement of Shareware, are committed to
the concept of shareware as a method of marketing. The ASP
has adopted general standards that all ASP authors have
agreed to follow, some of which are:
Support standard:
All ASP members' Shareware products must provide support
(included in the purchase price) for a minimum of three
months from the date of registration. Any money sent to an
author to register an unsupported product shall be promptly
returned with an explanation that the product in question is
no longer supported. Known incompatibilities with other
software or hardware and major or unusual program limitations
are noted in the documentation that comes with the Shareware
(evaluation) program.
'No crippling' standard:
The principle behind Shareware is "try before you buy". ASP
believes that users have a right to try a fully functioning
Shareware program in their regular computing environment.
Accordingly, ASP authors agree that:
- the executable files (and/or items linked in with execut-
ables) in the Shareware and Registered versions will
essentially be the same.
- all the program's features will be fully documented
- registration encouragement procedures which in the judg-
ment of the Board are either unreasonable or unprofessional
are not allowed.
Miscellaneous standards:
The program has been thoroughly tested by the author and
Page 3 of NEWBIZ.DOC
should not be harmful to other files or hardware if used
properly. Any discussion of the Shareware concept and of
registration requirements is done in a professional and
positive manner. If you are interested in ASP and in
Shareware issues, you are invited to come to the SHAREWARE
Forum on CompuServe, where many Shareware authors meet
regularly.
THE ASP OMBUDSMAN
This program is produced by a member of the Association of
Shareware Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that
the Shareware principle works for you. If you are unable to
resolve a Shareware-related problem with an ASP member by
contacting the member directly, ASP may be able to help. The
ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem with
an ASP member, but does not provide technical support for
members' products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545
Grover Road, Muskegon, MI 49442-9427, U.S.A. or send a
message via CompuServe Mail to ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536

SUCH DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY CLAIM BY ANY OTHER PARTY.
NewBiz is a copyrighted work, protected by U.S. and
International Copyright laws. It is NOT free, freeware, or in
the Public Domain. It is distributed as Shareware, which
means that you may try it out 3 times at no cost. If you
determine that it fits your needs and you wish to use it
regularly, you must register. If you choose not to pay the
registration fee, you must stop using NewBiz after these 3
initial trials and remove it from your computer, but you may
still keep copies of it and pass them on to others as
outlined below.
You may give individual copies of the unregistered version of
Page 4 of NEWBIZ.DOC
NewBiz to your friends and associates for evaluation purposes
as described above. You must include all the files (described
in the NEDWBIZ.LST file) that make up NewBiz without any
modifications, preferably in the original archived ZIP file.
You may upload NewBiz to the public section of a public BBS,
but you may not place it in any user group or commercial
library or distribute it for a fee or in any way sell copies
of it without express, written permission from CCI Ltd.
Under no circumstances may an unregistered version of NewBiz
be used in a business, corporate, government, educational, or
other institutional environment except for the purpose of
evaluation on a single computer. You may not modify or
disassemble NewBiz, nor distribute any modified or
disassembled versions of NewBiz. NewBiz may not be included
(bundled) with any other product for any reason whatsoever
without prior written permission from CCI Ltd.
You may install your registered copy of NewBiz on more than
one computer at a time ONLY if no more than one of these
computers is usually running at the same time. You may make
as many backup copies of NewBiz as you need for your personal
backup purposes. You may NOT give, sell, lend, or otherwise
transfer copies of the registered version of NewBiz to any
other person for any reason. Registered copies of NewBiz
carry a unique Personal Code and display your full name.
No version of NewBiz may be rented or leased. Any use or
distribution of NewBiz which violates this license agreement
will be considered a copyright violation, and may be
prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
U.S. Government RESTRICTED RIGHTS:
Use, duplication, or disclosure by the Government is subject
to restrictions as set forth in subdivision (b)(3)(ii) of the
Rights in Technical Data and Computer Software clause at
252.227-7013.
REGISTRATION
The purchase of a disk containing NewBiz from a Shareware
distributor does NOT constitute registration. You are granted
a limited license to make an evaluation copy for trial use on
a private, non-commercial basis for the specific purpose of
determining whether NewBiz is suitable for your purposes.
After the 3 allowed trials, you should either register New-
Biz, using the included NEWBIZ.REG file or the Registration
Form at the end of this documentation, or discontinue use.
The benefits of registration include:
- receipt of your Personal Code, with which you can register
NewBiz to your name, thus enabling you to bypass the
Page 5 of NEWBIZ.DOC
Registration Screen and eliminate Registration reminders
in the program. NewBiz will "know" you then, so that you
don't have to give it your name every time you use it.
- FREE support by First Class Air Mail or via CompuServe for
the first 90 days after payment, consisting of answering
your questions and fixing any reproducible program errors
that interfere with the intended use of NewBiz
- a FREE NewBiz Update, to be sent to you at the earliest
possible convenience (as soon as such an Update will have
come out) by First Class Air Mail as a LETTER (no Customs
interference, import duties or delay!)
Site licenses with quantity discounts of up to 80% available.
See the NBSITLIC.REG file for further information, or type
NBSITLIC after the DOS prompt.
INSTALLING NEWBIZ
Although it is easy to install the NewBiz files into a
Directory on your harddisk, using the NBINSTAL Utility will
facilitate the installation process considerably. Just type
NBINSTAL and all the necessary NewBiz files will be installed
automatically into their own NewBiz Directory on the harddisk
of your choice (C-G).
RUNNING NEWBIZ
Just enter the word NEWBIZ (in upper- or lowercase) and in a
short moment you'll see the opening screen and you'll hear a
whistle of admiration (yes, NewBiz is rightfully vain!),
after which you'll be taken to the Main Menu.
Basically, this Main Menu (to which you'll return every time
you have worked through one of its items) reflects the
structure of the Creative Thinking Process itself: Goal &
Criteria Setting, Idea Generation, Evaluation and Final
Results. You will also note that NewBiz is of course
dedicated to you, the user!
Context-sensitive help is available at all times and anywhere
in the program at the pressing of F1, and you will get an
index of all the help screens by pressing Ctrl/F1.
Also, when you happen to make an operational error, you will
be given clear and friendly explanations by Miss Take, your
Personal Assistant. She will also take you to that part of
NewBiz where you should be. You can silence Miss Take any
time by pressing the Esc key.
Moreover, icons indicate the thinking mode you are in at a
Page 6 of NEWBIZ.DOC
particular moment (the > icon standing for convergent, left
brain thinking and the < for divergent, right brain
thinking).
You may select a menu item in either of the two following
ways:
- either move the highlight bar with the down- or up arrow
key until you have arrived at the menu item you want to
select and then press ENTER,
- or press the first, highlighted letter of the menu item you
want to select. This menu item will then be executed
immediately, without your having to confirm your selection
by pressing ENTER
After a menu item has been executed, the highlight bar is
automatically moved to the next menu item, so that pressing
ENTER will suffice to execute that particular item.
Submenu items can be selected in exactly the same ways.
Load previous session
Since many brainstorming sessions are ongoing projects, it is
essential to be able to retrieve the data that were produced
in previous sessions.
What you will get when loading a previous session is:
- the previously stated goal
- the criteria and their respective weights
- the tangible assets previously entered
- the intangible assets previously entered
- all the ideas that were previously produced
Because of the very fact that you will be continuing a
previous session and will, hopefully, produce even more
ideas, you will not be getting data on those ideas that you
had previously selected and evaluated. This will enable you
to make a fresh start when selecting and evaluating ideas.
Goal & criteria setting
After selecting this Main Menu item, you will be taken to a
submenu comprising the items Goal Setting, Criteria
Setting/Rating and Back to Main Menu
Goal Setting
For easy operation's sake, NewBiz recognizes only one goal
per session. This can be a standard goal, such as setting up
your own business or improving the efficiency of your
Page 7 of NEWBIZ.DOC
existing business, or any other suitable goal you may wish to
set.
Please be concise and do not enter multiple goals. This will
clarify your thinking and further an effective, goal-oriented
use of NewBiz.
Criteria Setting/Rating
Criteria are yardsticks by which you measure/evaluate your
business ideas, such as "Must be fun to do" or "Must yield a
high income".
Since not all criteria are equally important, you must give
them a rating or "weight". These weights are in the 1-9
range. If a particular criterion is very, very important to
you, you give it a 9, and if it's not so terribly important
to you, you may give it a 6 or so.
NewBiz allows for the setting of a maximum of 5 criteria and
their respective weights. These are entered one after the
other.
If you happen to enter an incorrect weight, such as a zero
(0), you will get an error message, telling you that only
weights in the 1-9 range are allowed.
When trying to enter a correct weight after having
acknowledged the error by pressing the ENTER key, you will
notice that it is not possible to simply overwrite the
incorrect number previously entered. The only way to remove
that erroneous figure is to press the Delete key, thus
clearing the way for entering the correct weight.
Since NewBiz recognises the word STOP, you can terminate your
entry of criteria by entering this word (written in either
upper- or lowercase), or simply the letter S or s.
Back to Main Menu
This will take you back to the Main Menu and place the
highlight bar onto the next Main Menu item, which you can
then select by pressing the ENTER key.
Assets input
After selecting this Main Menu item, you will be taken to a
submenu comprising the items Tangible Assets input,
Intangible Assets input and Back to Main Menu
Tangible Assets
Page 8 of NEWBIZ.DOC
Tangible assets are those things and facilities that you can
dispose of, such as a house, rooms, a car, a garage, or an
answerphone. Please think of these in the broadest possible
terms; even a kitchen table or a coffee machine is a tangible
asset! Remember how many bestsellers were written on kitchen
tables?
People who are dear to you and who could help you by
providing labor or good advice also belong to your tangible
assets, so think of your partner, relatives, good friends,
yes even your kids! And don't forget animals such as dogs,
cats, cows or horses!
Also, it is not necessary at all that you actually own such
an asset. If you can dispose of it because you are borrowing
or renting it, you may regard it as your own tangible asset.
You can scroll through a list of tangible assets that you
entered previously by entering the command LIST (in upper- or
lowercase), or even faster and easier, the letter L or l. You
can exit this list by pressing the Esc key.
Please enter one tangible asset per line. In this program,
there is room for 100 tangible assets.
When terminating your entry of tangibles, you can use the
word STOP (in upper- or lowercase), or even faster and
easier, just the letter S or s.
Intangible Assets
Intangible assets are things such as your know-how, your
abilities, personality, reputation and experience, all in the
broadest sense. Don't be too modest; you have more
intangibles than you think!
You can scroll through a list of intangible assets that you
entered previously by entering the command LIST (in upper- or
lowercase), or even faster and easier, just the letter L or
l. You can exit this list by pressing the Esc key.
Please enter one intangible asset per line. In this program,
there is room for 100 intangible assets.
When terminating your entry of intangibles, you can use the
word STOP (in upper- or lowercase), or even faster and
easier, just the letter S or s.
Back to Main Menu
This will take you back to the Main Menu and place the
highlight bar onto the next Main Menu item, which you can
then select by pressing the ENTER key.
Page 9 of NEWBIZ.DOC
Idea Generation
The Idea Generation section of NewBiz really is the "heart"
of the program, the only place where the Divergent Thinking
Mode (as indicated by the < icon at the upper right hand
corner of the screen) is used. Here you can be as "wild" and
even "crazy" as you allow yourself to be.
The upper box contains a randomly produced pair of the
tangible and intangible assets that you supplied beforehand.
By entering the word NEW (in upper- or lowercase), or even
faster and easier, just the letter N or n, you can have the
computer produce a new random asset pair every time your
inspiration appears to be sagging.
Here, you see the unique "Idea Thermometer" that gives you a
constant visual indication of the number of ideas that you
have produced. Moreover, there is a counter at the bottom of
this "Idea Thermometer" that shows the exact number of ideas
that have been entered by you. Finally, the program will
regularly give you personal encouragement and emotional
support (psychologists call this "reinforcement").
You can scroll through a list of the ideas you previously
generated by entering the command LIST (in upper- or
lowercase), or even faster and easier, just the letter L or
l. You can exit this list by pressing the Esc key.
Please enter one idea per line. In this program, there is
room for 200 ideas. You will be alerted when this maximum
number of ideas has been reached.
When terminating your entry of ideas, you can use the word
STOP (in upper- or lowercase), or even faster and easier,
just the letter S or s.
Choose ideas to evaluate
It would be virtually impossible to evaluate all the ideas
that you have been generating, so it is absolutely necessary
to restrict the number of ideas to be evaluated. Moreover,
once you are in the Evaluation section, you will find it
impossible to get out before you have completed the entire
evaluation process (which can be very time consuming if you
have chosen a large number of ideas to be evaluated!). So
please select the most promising ideas only and limit their
total number to about 10. This will make it easier and
quicker for you to evaluate them. When using 5 criteria (the
maximum number), you will then still have to enter no fewer
than 50 ratings!
Page 10 of NEWBIZ.DOC
You can tag and/or untag the ideas to be evaluated by
pressing the spacebar. Please press ENTER or the E-key to
accept and confirm your selection of ideas for further
processing. You will then automatically be returned to the
next Main Menu item.
Evaluation
In this section, you will be presented with the ideas that
you have marked for evaluation on the one hand, and the
criteria that you have entered before on the other.
The selected ideas will be presented one after the other.
Both the total number of selected ideas and the number of the
idea under consideration are displayed at the top of the
entry window.
The idea to be evaluated is displayed in its own box, and the
criteria will appear one after the other below it.
Please keep in mind that you must rate the idea concerned in
terms of the criteria and that you are not supposed to rate
the criteria themselves (you did that before, remember?).
If you happen to enter an incorrect rating, such as a zero
(0), you will get an error message, telling you that only
ratings in the 1-9 range are allowed.
When trying to enter a correct rating after having
acknowledged the error by pressing the ENTER key, you will
notice that it is not possible to simply overwrite the
incorrect number previously entered. The only way to remove
that erroneous figure is to press the Delete key, thus
clearing the way for entering the correct rating.
NewBiz's evaluation procedures are so thorough and
quantitative that this program can double as a Decision
Support System. Just enter the items to be evaluated as
"ideas" in the AutoSuggest section and choose all of them in
the "Choose ideas to evaluate" section of this program.
Final results
In this section, you'll get a beautiful display of the
evaluated ideas in order of importance. There is no on-screen
display of the weighted average ratings (you'll get those
when making a printed or ASCII file report), but the top 3
ideas are always displayed first. You can then scroll
downward with the down arrow key or the PageDown key to view
the lower rated ideas. Pressing the Esc key takes you back to
the submenu.
Page 11 of NEWBIZ.DOC
Save this session
There is no submenu here. Instead, you will immediately be
asked for the name you'd like to give to your *.NEB workfile
(the .NEB extension will be supplied by NewBiz itself).
This *.NEB file will contain:
- the stated goal
- the criteria and their respective weights
- all tangible assets
- all intangible assets
- all ideas
and will be the same workfile that you will load when
selecting the "Load previous session" submenu item.
Print report
After selecting this Main Menu item, you will be taken to a
submenu comprising the items ASCII file report, Printed
report and Back to Main Menu.
ASCII file report
If you want to get a comprehensive, very detailed report that
can be processed by any Word Processing program, selecting
this submenu item would be the best thing to do.
Any such *.ASC file will contain your:
- stated goal
- criteria and their respective weights
- tangible assets
- intangible assets
- ideas
- selected ideas and their ratings
Please note that the idea ratings are "renormalized" weighted
averages, and that your best idea always gets the highest
possible rating, a 9. Your other ideas will be rated relative
to your best idea.
You will be asked to supply the name of this pure ASCII *.ASC
file (the .ASC extension will be provided by NewBiz itself).
Just in case something goes wrong with your printer, it is
wise to always make such an *.ASC file as a kind of backup.
This way, your entire work will be prevented from getting
irretrievably lost (remember that the *.NEB workfile does not
contain the selected ideas and their ratings).
Printed report
Page 12 of NEWBIZ.DOC
After you have selected this submenu item, NewBiz will print
out a quick, concise report of your session. This report will
contain your:
- stated goal
- criteria and their weights
- selected ideas and their ratings
Please note that the idea ratings are "renormalized" weighted
averages, and that your best idea always gets the highest
possible rating, a 9. Your other ideas will be rated relative
to your best idea.
Back to Main Menu
This will take you back to the Main Menu and place the
highlight bar onto the next Main Menu item, which you can
then select by pressing the ENTER key.
Quit NewBiz
Before allowing you to quit NewBiz, the program will check
whether you have saved your work and made at least one *.NEB
workfile. Even if you have made such a file, NewBiz will make
sure you really want to quit before returning you to DOS.
CREDITS
Although NewBiz is the work of Robert L.A. Trost, Idea
Management Consultant and Management Trainer with the Centre
for Commercial Innovation (CCI) Ltd. at Arnhem, Holland, it
was a major international programming project.
The unique, aesthetically pleasing "Sidemenu" system used in
this program is the magnificent work of John Strong from
Aloha, U.S.A., who also had the kindness of adapting his
EZ-Windows Library to the special demands of NewBiz.
The superb context-sensitive help system is the work of Sigi
Stephan, the young programming wizard from Bonn, Germany, who
made extra efforts to adapt his SuperQ Library to the special
requirements posed by NewBiz.
Several fascinating screen effects were taken from Tony
Martin's QBScreen Library. Tony, who lives and works in
Reston, U.S.A., also gave most valuable advice and support
during NewBiz's development.
Much support was also given by Rob W. Smetana from San
Francisco, U.S.A., Mike Welch from Dallas, U.S.A., and
Christy Gemmell from Leicester, England.
Page 13 of NEWBIZ.DOC
The various special screens were designed with the aid of the
masterful TheDraw screen designing program made by Ian Davis
from Walnut Creek, U.S.A.
Some of the tunes in NewBiz were composed using the fine
Melody Master program by Alexei A. Efros Jr, formerly from
Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia, and now living in
Salt Lake City, U.S.A.

EXCITING UPGRADES TO COME
Of course, we have exciting plans for the coming Upgrades of
NewBiz. Specifically, we intend to add the following features
Page 14 of NEWBIZ.DOC
to this program:
- a "bridge" to a Shareware free-form textbase, so that you
will not only be able to store all your ideas, but also to
retrieve them very quickly later on, using specific keywords
- an "AutoSuggest" option, whereby NewBiz will produce
tentative ideas for you. You will then be enabled to refine
or modify them This option will be of particular interest
and use to you if you are not yet familiar or at ease with
creative thinking, or if you are regularly plagued by the
"Monday blues" or the like.
- features that you suggest after having used this version of
NewBiz.
